Barrie-Hillsdale-Collingwood under snowsquall warning 0
Radar shows flurries and snow squalls are whitening regions south of Georgian Bay from near Owen Sound to Wasaga Beach and the Midland-Orillia areas then south southeast to King City and Vaughan. The strongest snow squalls will dump 15 to 25 cm per 12 hours especially if they get locked in over a particular locale for a while. A report of near 30 centimetres in Beeton was received earlier this morning as well as 30 centimetres in schomberg. There have also been several reports of near zero visibility as well as snowfall rates of several centimetres per hour.
As well..An area southeast of Lake Huron from near Point Clark to Lambton shores southeastwards through London to Elgin county and Lake Erie is being turned into a winter Wonderland by flurries and snow squalls. The snow squalls may dump 15 to 30 cm of snow per 12 hours onto Middlesex and eastern parts of Lambton county..Including London and Strathroy..Today into Tuesday. If a strong snow squall locks in over a particular locale for a while..Local accumulations of 60 cm or more by Tuesday morning are quite possible.
Strong and cold northwest winds blowing over the relatively warmer waters of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay will result in snow squalls with bursts of heavy snow and local whiteout conditions today and into Tuesday. A significant issue in all areas will be zero visibilities in whiteout conditions from blowing snow thanks to the northwesterly winds gusting to 60 km/h.
Motorists should note that dangerous winter driving conditions from whiteout conditions can and suddenly will develop from bursts of heavy snow and blowing snow. Quickly accumulating snow will also be a significant hazard...Which may make some highways virtually impassible to the southeast of Lake Huron due to the longevity of the snow squalls which may result in excessive snow depths.
The lake effect flurries and snow squalls may persist into Wednesday in this long-lived event.
Environment Canada continues to closely monitor this situation.
