SENIORS CAPTURE CONSOLATION CHAMPIONSHIP
The Pretty River Academy Senior Boys Basketball Team captured the Consolation Championship at the Laurentian University Invitational this past weekend.
In their opening game, Pretty River lost to North Bay West Ferris 60-37 despite 11 points each from Max and Sam Hirst.
In their second game the Pretty River Predators defeated Sudbury Secondary 58-
35. Sam Hirst led the Predator offense with 19 points, with Cole Thomson scoring 16 and grabbing eight steals, and Max Hirst adding 15 points.
Nick Stec pulled down 10 rebounds in the victory.
In the consolation semi-final Pretty River upended Sudbury St. Benedict's 69-44. Max Hirst led the scoring with 21 points with Nick Stec putting in 18 points and Sam Hirst adding 17 points and nine assists.
In the consolation Final, Collingwood's Pretty River Academy defeated Sudbury Lo-Ellen 50-48.
Sam Hirst scored 22 in the final with Max Hirst scoring 15 and Cole Thomson adding
11. Nick Stec grabbed 11 rebounds in the final game.
Sam Hirst was chosen to the Laurentian University Invitational All-Star Team.
ATOM 'HAWKS NET PAIR OF VICTORIES
The Collingwood Blackhawks "Hanna Motors" Atom A's eir winning ways over the weekend.
On Saturday, the Blackhawks hosted the Wasaga Stars and cruised to a 7-0 victory.
Zach Tupker led the goal scoring with a hat trick while singles went to Ben Tupker, Cameron Penner, Mark Dupont and Adam Pollard. Dallas Dawson and Ewan Botelho had two assists each while Ben Tupker, David Evans, Glen McMahon, Jason Underhill, Ryan McMullin and goaltender Nick Newhouse contributed one each.
Newhouse made his debut as the new starting goaltender for the Atom A team and recorded a shutout.
On Sunday the Blackhawks travelled to Midland to take on the second-place Centennials. This was a tight game with Collingwood eventually coming out on top with a close 2-1 victory.
Ryan McMullin opened the scoring in the second period with a blast from the blue-line. David Evans rounded out the scoring with an innocent looking long-shot that fooled the Midland goaltender. Evans' goal was setup by Zach Tupker and Ewan Botelho.
Nick Newhouse was simply outstanding in net, making several key saves, including stopping Midland's Patrick Brown on a penalty shot with 21 seconds left in regulation time.
Collingwood's next home game will be Friday morning at 9:30 a. m. when they kick off the Huronia Tournament against Saugeen Shores.
NOVICE SQUAD COMES AWAY WITH EASY WIN
Collingwood Novice A Blackhawks sponsored by The Kiwanis Club was on the road this weekend. The Hawks took on The Stayner Cyclones Friday night and came away with an 8-1 victory.
Leading the scoring was Tyler Fish with three goals and an assist. Rounding out the scoring was Myles Baker (2), Dallas McQueen, Jack Cowling and Bennet Wright.
Playing a strong two-way game was Tyler Karl with three assists, Milan Rejc had two assists while Liam Kelly, Veronica Rejc and Jack Cowling all had an assist each.
The Blackhawks travelled to Midland on Saturday to take on archrivals Midland Centennials. The Hawks came out on top for the second time this season with a 5-3 win.
Goalie Daniel Botelho had another great game, making huge saves at key moments of the game. Scoring for Collingwood were Tyler Fish with two goals, Emmett Sproule with a goal and two assists, Chris Brown with a goal and an assist, and Tyler Karl with a goal. Assist went to Bennet Wright (2),Milan Rejc, Dallas McQueen, Jack Cowling and Myles Baker. Rock solid on defence was Jayden Soychak and Liam Kelly.
This takes the 'Hawks record to 12 wins and 0 losses .
CLEARVIEW ICES VAUGHAN
The Clearview Icecats peewee B squad tripled Vaughan on the weekend, 3-1
Scoring for Clearview were: Rebecca Spence from Mardi Jerry, Gabrielle Auclair from Aliya Soychak and Emma Whiteside, and Mardi Jerry from Rebecca Spence.
According to coaches Faith Jonkman pulled off some excellent goaltending as the girls were back in their home rink. The team's record is 8-1-1, and the girls head to Pittsburgh this wekeend. Madison Winchester is still off awaiting clearance from the doctor.
