Let's End Homelessness... Together!

Mary Walker is a 32 year-old mother of three. She lives in Simcoe County and works as an administrative assistant. She exercises by chasing her two-year-old son around the house, doing laundry, shuttling her kids from one activity to another and grocery shopping. She spends her Saturdays with her husband and kids, usually doing chores, and her Sundays at Church and with family. By all accounts Mary is an average citizen.

But on October 1, 2016, Mary Walker will become a hero. She has challenged herself to go the distance for the 66% of women living on the streets simply because of unaffordable rents or due to eviction. Mary will participate in the Ride for Refuge event in support of the Housing Resource Centre. She’s never biked 5km in one day nor raised more than $50, but this year is different.

This year, Mary has heard that every night in Canada, approximately 35,000 people are homeless and family homelessness makes up a significant percentage of the overall homeless population in Canada. Families are one of the highest risk groups for homelessness given the extreme levels of poverty, food insecurity and housing unaffordability in this country. She knows that by addressing the root causes of homelessness, we can prevent the cycle of poverty and homelessness experienced by families. Mary wants to help! This year, Mary will bike 5 km and has pledged to raise $1,000 to improve the lives of those experiencing homelessness, or on the brink of homelessness.

“As long as we refuse to admit that homelessness and affordable housing is a problem, it will continue to be! Nothing great has ever been achieved without dedication, commitment and hard work,” Mary says.

Staff at the Housing Resource Centre meet families and individuals on a daily basis that are struggling with the costs of housing, utilities and the basic necessities of life. In 2015, 1137 people sought help through the Housing Resource Centre.

The Housing Resource Centre helps families and individuals gain a firm foundation upon which to build better lives. We will continue to be “THE FIRST STOP” for those in crisis and who need assistance to find housing that they can afford. And with your support, we will have the capacity to make an incredible difference!

This October 1st, join Mary and help us put an end to homelessness!
